CURATORIAL NOTE 

Shared Tides searches for stories from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka beyond a conflicted past - stories that emerge from the continuums of shared waters, language, cultures, rituals, identities and a collective retelling of history from heard and unheard voices. 

Artists from Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu travelled to each other's countries to develop visual stories and collect oral narratives on these shared themes. By looking at the past, their research and projects hope to build a shared present.

The Shared Tides Showcase is the continuation of a conversation that was never silenced by the ebb and flow of time - personal accounts of lived experiences by the elderly in Sri Lanka; preservation of shared rituals; the complex dynamics of borders and identities; repatriation and ‘otherness’ -  leaving you with few questions to think on - what shapes our identities if national borders change? Whose stories go unheard and whose make history? How do we define home and how do we find it?

Shared Tides emerged as a collaborative idea between the CPB Foundation, Goethe-Institut/MMB Chennai, Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka and Kalam Jaffna to offer a residency program to artists and lens-based practitioners to travel to the other side of the shore and to respond with artistic projects along these themes.

ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் குறிப்பு

ஷேர்டு டைட்ஸ் என்னும் கலாபூர்வமான நிகழ்வு தமிழ்நாட்டிலிருந்தும் இலங்கையிலிருந்தும் மோதல்கள் நிறைந்த கடந்த காலத்திற்கு அப்பால் சில கதைகளைத் தேடுகிறது. இரு தரப்பினரிடையே பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட நீர், மொழி, கலாச்சாரங்கள், சடங்குகள், அடையாளங்கள் ஆகியவற்றின் தொடர்ச்சியிலிருந்து வெளிப்படும் கதைகள் இவை. இதுவரை நாம் கேட்ட, கேட்டிராத குரல்களினூடே ஒலிக்கும் வரலாற்றின் கூட்டு மறுபரிசீலனைகள்.

காட்சி வடிவிலான கதைகளை உருவாக்குவதற்கும், பொதுவான இந்தக் கருப்பொருள்களில் அமைந்த வாய்மொழிக் கதைகளைச் சேகரிப்பதற்கும் இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்த கலைஞர்கள் தமிழ்நாட்டுக்கும் தமிழ்நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த கலைஞர்கள் இலங்கைக்கும் சென்றார்கள். கடந்த காலத்தைப் பார்ப்பதன் மூலம், அவர்களுக்கான பொதுவான நிகழ்காலத்தை உருவாக்க முடியும் என்னும் நம்பிக்கையை அவர்களின் ஆராய்ச்சியும் திட்டங்களும் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன.

ஷேர்டு டைட்ஸ் ஷோகேஸ் என்னும் திட்டம், மேலும் கீழுமாக அலைபாயும் காலத்தின் ஓட்டத்தினால் ஒருபோதும் மௌனமாகாத ஒரு உரையாடலின் தொடர்ச்சி. இலங்கையில் முதியோர்களின் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கை அனுபவங்கள்; பொதுவான சடங்குகளைப் பாதுகாத்தல்; எல்லைகள் மற்றும் அடையாளங்களின் சிக்கலான இயக்கவியல்; திருப்பி அனுப்புதல், 'மற்றமை'  ஆகியவை சார்ந்த அனுபவங்கள் ஆகியவற்றின் தொகுப்பு இந்தத் திட்டம். இந்த அனுபவங்கள் சிந்திக்கவைக்கும் சில கேள்விகளை எழுப்புகின்றன: தேச எல்லைகள் மாறும்போது நமது அடையாளங்களை எது வடிவமைக்கிறது? யாருடைய கதைகள் கேட்கப்படாமல் போகின்றன? யாருடைய கதைகள் வரலாறாகின்றன? வீட்டை எவ்வாறு வரையறுப்பது? அதை எவ்வாறு கண்டுபிடிப்பது?

CPB அறக்கட்டளை, கோதே இன்ஸ்டிட்யூட்/சென்னை மேக்ஸ்முல்லர் பவன், காலம் ஜாஃப்னா ஆகிய அமைப்புகளின் ஒருங்கிணைந்த கருத்தாக்கமாக ஷேர்ட் டைட்ஸ் என்னும் திட்டம் உருவானது. கலைஞர்களுக்கும் ஒளிப்படக் கருவிகளின் அடிப்படையிலான பயிற்சியாளர்களுக்கும் எல்லையைத் தாண்டிப் பயணிப்பதற்கும் இந்தக் கருப்பொருள்கள் சார்ந்த கலைத் திட்டங்களை உருவாக்குவதற்குமான வதிவிடத் திட்டத்தை ஷேர்ட் டைட்ஸ் வழங்குகிறது.
